SharePoint Server 2016 New and Deprecated Features

New Features in SharePoint 2016:

1.     Zero time down patching :
Ø  No downtime is required to install the SharePoint Cumulative updates.
Ø  Business users can access the applications while SharePoint Administrators installing the SharePoint Cumulative Updates.
        2.     Fast site collection creation:
Ø  Only one second to improve Site Collection creation performance by reducing Feature activation overhead.
        3.    Central Administration is no longer provisioned on all servers by default.
Ø  SharePoint Server 2016 Central Administration is now provisioned on the first server in a farm by default when using the SharePoint Products Configuration Wizard.
Ø  You can provision or unprovision Central Administration on individual servers in a farm, no matter what the server role is by using the following methods:
§  The Services on Server page on Central Administration > System Settings.
§  Windows PowerShell cmdlets:
·         New-SPCentralAdministration
·         Remove-SPCentralAdministration
§  The psconfig.exe -cmd adminvs operation.
§  The SharePoint Products Configuration Wizard
Ø  Central Administration is not provisioned on additional servers in a farm by default.

Ø  The MinRole health rule will not attempt to provision or unprovision Central Administration.
Ø  The state of Central Administration does not affect whether a server is considered compliant with MinRole.
        4.     Minimal Role:

Ø  Allows users to perform a Role based Installations (Application, Front-End, Distributed cache, search, custom and single server farm).


      5.    Advanced Schedule scan for health analyzer.
      6.    Simplified SSL configuration for Central Administration site.
      7.    Durable links:

Ø  Durable Links provide a resource Id based link for Web Application Open Platform Interface Protocol (WOPI) documents served by SharePoint and Office Online Server.
Ø  The resource Id assigned to individual documents is stored in the content database related to the source document.
Ø  When using Durable Links when a user selects a link to a specific document, SharePoint Server 2016 IT Preview looks up the file by the resource Id and opens it in Office Online Server Preview. 
Ø  Durable Links allow documents to be moved and renamed without affecting the integrity of the linking Url associated with a document.

Ø  This is the Feature we need to activate for the Durable Links

       
    
Ø  If we rename document or move the document to some other Document Library/folder when user is trying to access the old URL, user will be redirected to new url and document will be opened.


8.     New tool bar for the document library
 
Ø  (New,Upload,Sync and Share for multiple files).


9.     Supports SQL Server 2016 CTP 3.1 and the Power Pivot add-in and Power View.

10.     Supports Open Document Format (ODF) files to use in document library templates.
11.     Image, Docs and video previews.
         


         12.    Keyboard shortcuts are provided for document tasks

         13.   Web Application Open Platform Interface Protocol (WOPI):
Ø  You can now rename files, create new files, and share files from within the WOPI iframe on the browser page.
         14.     App launcher:

Ø  Allows you to navigate between OneDrive, sites and newsfeed that can be customized.
            


15.    Site Folder View:

           Ø  Lets you access the document libraries in sites that you’re following.

Ø  Create and Share folder,
Ø  Sharing Hint,
Ø  See who the folder is shared with when viewing a folder,
Ø  Members can share,
Ø  Improved invitation mail,
Ø  One-click email to approve or deny a request for access.
        


18.     Sites page pinning:
Ø  You can now pin sites that you see on the sites page. A pinned site shows at the top of the list of sites that you’re following.
19.     Encrypt Outgoing email:
Ø  Supports SMTP servers that use TCP ports other than the default port (25).
Ø  Supports sending email to SMTP servers that use STARTTLS connection encryption.
20.     Remove Character limit in URL
21.     File names are now supported:
Ø  Names with special characters like &,@ (% and # are still not allowed),
Ø  Names that contained a GUID,
Ø  Names with leading dots,
Ø  Names longer than 128 characters.
22.    Adds Recycle Bin link in the left navigation area of the OneDrive and Team sites:

         23.  New Compliance Policy Center & In-Place Hold Policy Center site      collection templates:
  
Ø  Allows the organization to manage its governance policies across site collections.

        28.  Hybrid Integration:
Ø  Enable the following scenarios between office 365 with SharePoint On-Prem via Central Administration.
§  Cloud hybrid search,
§  Hybrid OneDrive for Business,
§  Hybrid sites features.
  1. Workflow Manager is still part of SharePoint 2016.
  2. Sandboxed Solutions are still supported.
  3.  Project Server 2016:
Ø  Project Server 2016 runs as a service application in SharePoint Server 2016.
Ø  The SharePoint Server 2016 MSI file will contain the installation files for Project Server 2016 as well.
Ø  A separate installation is no longer required as it was in previous versions of Project Server.
Ø  Project Server 2016 is installed with SharePoint Server 2016 Enterprise, though is licensed separately.

           Limitations for SP 2016:

    1.     Search index size
Ø  It has been increased to 500 million items (250 million items in SharePoint 2013).
2.     Maximum file size upload
Ø  It has increased up to 10 GB. (2 GB in SharePoint 2013).
3.     The list threshold
Ø  It has been increased >5000 per view/query.
4.     The content database size
Ø  It has been increased up to 1 TB (200 GB in SharePoint 2013).

Deprecated Features for SharePoint Server 2016:

1.     InfoPath 2013 and SharePoint Designer 2013

Ø   It will be the last versions of those products.However, the support for InfoPath 2013 and    
                     SharePoint Designer 2013 will match the support life cycle for SharePoint Server  
                 2016,  running until 2026.
         2.     STSADM.exe
Ø  The STSADM command-line tool has been deprecated, but it is included to support compatibility with previous product versions. STSADM is also in list of SharePoint 2013 deprecated features.

3.     User Profile service (ForeFront Identity Manager Client)
Ø  SharePoint Server 2016 no longer uses FIM as the synchronization client.
Ø  FIM (synchronize between Active Directory and SharePoint) is being removed and the bidirectional sync with AD has been improved.
Ø  The default process is Active Directory Import.
Ø  You can also use any synchronization tool such as Microsoft Identity Manager 2016.
4.     Tags and Noted
Ø  They are completely deprecated.
5.     SharePoint Foundation
Ø  SharePoint Foundation is no longer available in the SharePoint Server 2016 release.
Ø  SharePoint Foundation 2013 remains available for use.
6.     Excel Services
Ø  Excel Services and its associated business intelligence capabilities are no longer hosted on SharePoint Server.
Ø  Excel Services functionality is now part of Excel Online in Office Online Server.
7.     Standalone Install Mode
Ø  SharePoint Server 2016 doesn’t support the standalone install option.
8.     The Work Management Service Application
Ø  You couldn’t now aggregate tasks to a central location on SharePoint because the Work Management Service Application has been removed.
9.     My Tasks and associated Exchange Task Sync features
Ø  They have been removed because the Work Management Service Application that is required for both features has also been removed.
10.     BI Capabilities
Ø  The SQL Server 2014 Power Pivot and Power View add-ins for SharePoint Server 2016 cannot be deployed or used in SharePoint Server 2016.
Ø  To deploy these add-ins you need to upgrade to SQL Server 2016 CTP 3.1
